Setting: The world Hellboy and B.P.R.D. takes place in is essentially the same world as our own. It has the same countries, the same cities, the same borders, and so on. Still, while there are the same in many ways, there are also some big differences that contribute to how this world works and functions. So let’s get right to it, shall we?

One thing that makes this world different from our own is one simple fact: aliens, gods, and monsters all exist, and they’re a big problem. Some of them aren’t so bad, but more often than not, they run amok and try to hurt people, endanger them, or bring about the end of the world in some way or another. However, it isn’t as simple as “these things exist”, and there are several key paranormal figures and elements that work to shape the Hellboy universe into what it is.

Hollow Earth
In the Hellboy universe, the Earth is actually hollow. It is inhabited by a subterranean race that was left to live inside the Earth for ages. They intended to return to the surface and reclaim their place there. They kidnapped Liz and used her to abilities to power war machines meant to help overthrow mankind, although they were stopped by Abe, Johann, and Roger, and Liz was rescued. However, they are still alive and have not changed their plans of eventually returning to the surface.

Fairies
The fairies in the Hellboy universe are not necessarily the tiny creatures with wings that one would normally picture. Rather, the word “fairies” is used as an umbrella term that houses creatures like trolls, pixies, elves, gnomes, selkies, and so on. Encounters and sightings of these creatures have become increasingly rare, due to most of them gradually disappearing or dying out. Some of these creatures don’t cause much trouble and are content to live while they still can, while others are determined to return to power by any means necessary.

The Ogdru Jahad
The Dragon, Ogdru Jahad were originally seven gigantic monsters created by a spirit called Anum, and they were extremely powerful and potentially destructive. Afraid of what they were capable of, Watchers begged Anum to remove the Ogdru Jahad since they could not be destroyed. So, Anum imprisoned the Ogdru Jahad in shells made of crystal and sent them away.

Unfortunately, while the Ogdru Jahad were imprisoned, they were not without power, nor were they forgotten. While their existence was still met with fear and awe, there were others – such as Rasputin – that knew of their powers, and wanted to summon and use them to change and reshape the Earth.

The Ogdru Hem
The Ogdru Hem are the 369 ‘children’ of the Ogdru Jahad. They were born after darkness entered the Ogdru Jahad, and became the first creatures on Earth. While the Ogdru Hem couldn’t be completely destroyed since their spirits remained, they were still dealt with. Most were ‘cast out on the wind’, while the rest were trapped in under the sea or inside the Earth. However, while trapped, the Ogdru Hem are still alive and, like the Ogdru Jahad, still have power. Although they are easier to bring back, as they already reside on Earth.

It was not unheard of for the spirits of the Ogdru Hem to return, or for the trapped ones to be released. The Ogdru Hem can cause massive change and destruction, and also have a connection with the Ogdru Jahad – this makes them extremely useful and important to anyone that wants to bring about the return of the Ogdru Jahad.

Project Ragna Rok
Project Ragna Rok was something that shaped and influenced an important aspect of the Hellboy universe. Plotted by Grigori Rasputin, he promised Hitler that this would be a miracle that would win him the war. Project Ragna Rok was originally meant to be a way to bring about the apocalypse by releasing the Ogdru Jahad from their prison, but Rasputin failed to bring them back out. Instead, Hellboy was summoned to Earth in the ruins of a church in East Bromwich.

The Frogs
The frogs were monsters originally spawned by the creature, Sadu-Hem (one of the Ogdru Hem). When the Cavendish expedition arrived at a Hyperborean temple, Sadu-Hem was found and awoken, and several of the explorers – the Cavendish brothers, and Sven Olafsen – into frog monsters. Sadu-Hem was later defeated by Hellboy, Liz, and Abe in Cavendish Hall. That was not the last of Sadu-Hem, though. In 2004, B.P.R.D. investigators discovered a fungus spore in the ruins of Cavendish Hall, which was actually new form for Sadu-Hem. It was contained in a B.P.R.D. lab and allowed to grow, but was stolen and took over the body of another man. It transformed other people into the frog monsters, which were much stronger, faster, and could take more damage than any regular human. Beyond that, they were also capable of taking human form, which made them difficult to spot.

Sadu-Hem was defeated once again, but the frog monsters were still around, they were breeding, and they were changing other people into frogs as well. The B.P.R.D. continued to hunt down and eliminate the frog populations over the next two years, and in 2006 things changed again. With the assistance of the C.E.O. of the Zinco corporation – at the time taking on the persona of the Black Flame – the frogs managed to summon yet another one of the Ogdru Hem, Katha-Hem. However, while the frogs and Katha-Hem did a great deal of damage, Liz Sherman managed to destroy it, and both the Black Flame and many of the remaining frogs fell into a massive crack in the Earth. However, both the Black Flame and the frogs survived, and ended up finding and joining forces with the subterranean race living inside the Earth.

Naturally, all of this means trouble for everyone involved, but thankfully there is a solution to all of this, and that solution is almost always the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

The B.P.R.D. was formed in 1944, following Hellboy being brought into the world after the final stages of Project Ragna Rok. Professor Trevor Bruttenholm brought Hellboy back to an air force military base in New Mexico, and soon after he created the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

The Bureau exists to protect the people of Earth from any paranormal threats that the world is faced with, and receives government funding from several countries, although it mostly comes from America and the United Kingdom. The existence of the B.P.R.D. is also nothing new, or even a secret. The organization works in the public eye, and frequently investigates and takes care of issues that civilians report to them.

They also worked to track and hunt down the frog monsters while they were still running rampant, and eventually moved to a large, abandoned research facility in the Colorado mountains. However, the facility was last inhabited by a group of Nazi scientists, and it left them with a great deal of secret files and documents to go through, along with everything else they were working on.

The B.P.R.D. mostly has human agents working for them; scholars, former soldiers or police officers, scientists, and so on. Kate Corrigan is one of their human agents, who went from a consultant, to field agent, to field director, to a special agent meant to communicated with and help the enhanced talent agents.

The "enhanced talent" agents are people with abilities or appearances that go above and beyond what a normal human can do. These can range from the relatively small, like a psychic or a medium, to something much larger. The notable agents, both past and present, have been Hellboy (a demon with a stone right hand meant to help bring about the apocalypse), Abe Sapien (a fishman), Roger (a homunculus), Johann Kraus (an ectoplasmic medium whose body was destroyed, his spirit now lives in a containment suit), Ben Daimio (a former Marine that was killed and came back to life), and the firestarter herself, Liz Sherman. Their presence can be frightening or unsettling to some, but like everyone else in the B.P.R.D., they're all here to help.

All in all, it's the same world as our own, except there are all sorts of paranormal nasties running around. Liz and the rest of the B.P.R.D. are around to try and stop everything from getting too out of hand.

Personality: To a stranger, Liz wouldn’t seem like a very friendly or approachable person – and they wouldn’t be completely wrong with that assumption. Liz makes a habit of keeping people at arm’s length when it comes to getting to know her, and she doesn't really have much interest in making many more friends, either. It isn't that Liz dislikes being around people, but it takes a while for her to warm up to people, and the same goes for being able to trust new people (outside of the line of duty, that is). In that sense, it's easier to for Liz to try and keep a professional relationship with other people than it is to go for anything more than that. In her line of work, people can die easily and without much warning depending on what's going on. It's always tragic when people die, but it's easier to move on and keep going if she isn't familiar with them.

Liz doesn't hold back when she speaks her mind about certain issues, either. If someone does something she thinks is stupid, she'll let them know and she won't bother with sugarcoating it. As far as Liz is concerned, the chance of some hurt feelings isn't going to matter very much at the end of the day. It's better to be blunt and to let people know exactly what's up than to dance around the issue and hope that somebody gets it.

Liz' mood can also change quite quickly at times, and not always for the better. When she gets upset, Liz usually closes herself off from others and becomes very withdrawn until she finds a way to pick herself back up, or forces her way through things. However, there are also times when Liz' attitude can go from sad and quiet to bristling and angry with very little provocation. Neither one is really better than the other, though. Liz struggles to connect with people when depressed, and she's much harder to reason with when angry and occasionally lashes out at people. She isn't always the most approachable person at the best of times, and this is certainly something that could make it more difficult.

Liz also has troubles with commitment and sticking with the choices she's made. Throughout her years working with the B.P.R.D., she ended up quitting 13 times so she could try to live a normal life. However, she always ended up returning because no matter how badly she wanted a regular life, Liz could never completely trust herself in the outside world. She's also acted similarly on a much smaller scale, as she frequently quits smoking before taking up the habit all over again. Liz is aware that it's bad for her, but it calms her down and that's good enough for her.

However, while Liz isn’t the most easygoing person, she certainly isn’t bad. There’s a sweeter side to her, although that mostly comes out when Liz is with her friends, or anyone else she cares for. It's easier for her to relax around them, joke around, and just be herself instead of The Burn Lady. Liz is a happier person when she's with the people she loves, and she appreciates them more than she lets on. If someone stays friends with her and cares for her in spite of what she's done and what she can do, it helps Liz with dealing with any loneliness she might feel. Even if she doesn't have a place in the normal world, there are still people out there that care for her. It usually takes a while for her to grow comfortable with someone new, but with enough time and effort, Liz can bring herself to trust someone enough to let them into her life.

While Liz may have friends to support her, she lives with a great deal of guilt and self-loathing, too. Accidentally killing her family and 29 other people was something she has accepted, but never truly gotten over. So many people have died over the years, all because she couldn't keep her abilities under control. She considers it a personal failure on her part, and while Liz has since gained better control over her abilities, it's still something she'll probably never forgive herself for.

Still, even with all of that, at the end of the day what Liz wants most is to be able to live her life peacefully. A life with no nightmares, no fear of losing control, and no world going to Hell. It probably won't happen, though, and she knows this. So, when she's in a good state of mind, she does her best to try and make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. If she can take care of business without anything going wrong, without somebody dying, then that's good. It may not be perfect, but it's something, at least.

When it comes to reactions, Liz will mostly just be confused. As discussed with the mods, since Liz is being brought from the same canon point, she is allowed to keep her memories, and it will just feel like she blacked out. So after being pulled back out of the ocean again, she'll be wondering how and why she ended up in the water and why she's being given the newbie-treatment. Afterward she'd most likely ask around to find out what's been going on, but aside from that, it'll be business as usual.

Appearance:

Abilities:
Liz' greatest strength is definitely her pyrokinesis. She's able to create and manipulate fire at will, can control how big the fires are, as well as where they originate. As far as the mundane goes, Liz often uses her powers to light cigarettes, to light up dark spaces, and so on. On a much larger scale, Liz' pyrokinesis has reduced buildings to smouldering rubble, has frequently been used to burn hoards of monsters alive, and has destroyed two of the Ogdru Hem.

Liz has been able to use her abilities to send messages in the past, too. In Hollow Earth, Liz sought out Abe by projecting a flaming image of herself in his room, asking for him to come find her. However, Liz was only shown doing this once and it was a rather extreme situation (her soul was being used to power a giant machine at the time), and she hasn't done it again since. Still, it's probably something worth mentioning.

While Liz normally relies on her pyrokinesis in a fight, she's also a skilled hand-to-hand combatant. Liz has been occasionally been shown working out in her spare time, and in situations where she has been unable to use her fire, her combat skills have proven that she is still quite capable on her own. This was showcased a few times in the Monsters storyline, where she broke a man's jaw with one kick in one instance, and managed to overpower a couple with a cleaver and a shotgun in another, without using any weapons (or powers) of her own.

Inventory: Just the clothes on her back.

Suite: No preference. So, random I guess?

In-Character Samples:

Third Person: The difference between damp and cold is that one is easier for Liz to deal with.

The cold isn’t so bad, especially when all she needs to do is just light something up to fix it. This... isn’t the same. All this moisture, combined with the freezing air chilled her to the bone, and she couldn’t start anything big. Not yet.

All she’s got right now is the small orb of fire lighting the way through the cave.

Abe doesn’t seem to mind much.

Then again, why would he? He’s better suited to this kind of work, and he always has been. Abe is the fish guy – he’s used to the damp, the cold, and the wet. Hell, he spends his nights sleeping in a tank full of water.

Liz? She was better suited for dry heat, where it’s easier for something to catch fire, which makes getting the job done a whole lot quicker.

Apparently, though, the thing that was killing campers and bringing them into this cave didn’t like fire. Or at least, that was what one of the survivors reported. She remembered reading through the file while Kate was giving them a briefing on it; apparently the kid managed to frighten it away by hurling one of the logs from the fire at it. He had some nasty burns, and apparently the thing made off with his dad, but he got out alive.

In situations like these, it’s really the best you can hope for.

“Looks like this is where I get off.” Abe said, stopping at the edge of a deep pool at the end of the cave.

Liz frowned slightly, and reached forward to grasp his shoulder.

“Abe?”

He paused and glanced back at her, “What is it?”

“No big risks, okay? You find it and come back up, and I burn it once you’re out of the way.”

“Just like we planned. I’ll be back soon.” And with that, he dove in.

“Sure thing.” Liz said as she reached into her jacket to pull out a cigarette, “I’ll be waiting.”

Network:
[She still hasn't been sleeping. Liz has been here for weeks, and she still hasn't been sleeping. Or rather, she hasn't been sleeping for long. Even with that... man gone, her dreams are still plagued with images of the apocalypse. Nothing but rubble, monsters, and the dead - apparently her subconscious won't let her forget, as much as she'd like to. Really, it feels like no matter where she goes, Liz is doomed to keep dreaming about all of this.

Eventually the video comes on, revealing Liz looking as exhausted and worn out as she had been when she first arrived.
]

I've got a question for you - and there's no right or wrong answer, so don't worry about that.

[Sigh.]

What do you dream about?
